How to: Post a linked chart or picture

UPDATED:

Here are a few simple instructions to help you post a linked chart or picture.

1. Make sure your chart or image has been uploaded to a publicly available site, i.e. http://www.megimage.com/

2. Create a file called "LinkedImageHTML.htm" in an easily accessible place or on your desktop

3. Paste the following text into that file:

<html>
<head><title> ... My workspace for a linked image ... </title></head>
<body>
<p> <a href="LinkURL">
<img src="ImageURL"
</a>
</p>
</body>
</html>

4. Replace "LinkURL" with the full address of your chart or picture (if you scaled the image down in your post) or the address where you want the image to point to.

5. Replace the ImageURL" with the full address (URL) of your chart or picture.

6. Now save it and open a second browser window.

7. In that browser window open the file "LinkedImageHTML.htm"

8. You are now ready to paste your new linked image into your post.

9. Depending on your browser do the following
- In IE, mark the image with your mouse click "copy" and then paste it into post

- In Firefox, simply drag the image into the post

10. Now that you have the image in your post, just resize it for best appearance starting from the bottom right.

Now let's get rolling with those linked charts!

regli,

I am trying to post a picture of my chart for Varian. The problem I have is this: whenever I post a link to one of my stockcharts.com charts which I have worked on with comments, trendlines and Fibos, what happens is the posters opening my link see a different sized chart with truncated notes. I would like to post my chart's total picture embedded in markettraders forums without any links, just like you posted the sample of one of your charts here.

Your instructions on how to post charts make no sense to me. Could you please write the instructions in clear English?

By the way, here is the link to my chart:

http://stockcharts.com/h-sc/ui?s=VAR&p=M&st=1999-01-01&id=p85282221828&a=97305142&listNum=75

Any help would be much appreciated. And I know all the posters on Fool who will migrate over here will appreciate being able to finally see charts like the original poster sees them on his or her end.

Thanks in advance,

Rock in Key West

Here is your chart:

The image “http://www.megimage.com/easyupload/picstore/200702/200702000000381.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Regli,

The Varian chart is what I was trying to show; however, my trendlines, notes, etc., are not showing on your posted picture of my Varian chart.

When Mish posts a stockcharts.com chart to his blog from Brian, Brian's notes on his charts show up.

Also, his charts will expand if you click on them.

If you could help me set up the charts to work this way here, I will post here a lot.

Also, I would like to set up my own board for stock picks which I'll toss out once a month with fundamental analysis and technical analysis backed with my pictures from my stockcharts.com account.

I hope you can help me,

Thanks,

DJ,

I definitely want to encourage you to post here a lot. :)  I'll show you an easy way how to post linked charts just the way Mish does some on his blog.  Check out this post in "Currencies, FOREX and Interest Rates" and click on the charts. It is hopefully what you are looking for.

I updated the instructions for "linked charts" in the header of this topic.  Please give it a try and let me know what if you succeeded.

Any comments to improve the instructions are also appreciated.

Regli,

Can you provide instructions on how to do this merely in Notepad, without all the juggling of files, saving, multi-browsers, ad nausea?

I followed the instructions above best I could... they're not working.

What to tag the hosted  jpg URL to have these boards resolve?

It actually sounds more difficult than it is.

Have you uploaded your image?

http://www.megimage.com/

If you did then please posts the URL of the image here.  I'll then give you the instructions as to how your "html" file should look like in notepad.

The reason for using a browser is that notepad cannot interpret HTML  So the first step is to create HTML and the second is to look at it.  From there it can be copied into your post.

As you may have seen, I described two ways to post an image.  The first one is posted here:

http://forum.themarkettraders.com/read-m/7/35/35#msg-35

In both Firefox and IE, simply right click the link to your image and choose "Open in New Window".

You now should see the image in the newly opened browser window.

In Firefox, you can at this point simply drag the image into a post reply window.

In IE you need to mark the image by dragging the mouse pointer from outside the image with your left mouse button down towards the inside of the image.  If the image darkens slightly you have succeeded.  Now click "edit/copy".  Now go to the reply window and click "edit/paste" and you should see the image in the reply window like this:

Click preview and if you're happy just post it.

The second set of instructions in this particular topic goes a little further in that it allows you to post an image as a link.  This has the advantage that you can post a "thumbnail" or smaller picture but allow the viewer to click on the image to view it full size.

The following instructions address how to create a linked picture using your image as an example.

Open a notepad window and copy the HTML statements starting from "<html>" though "</html>" into that window.

<html>
<head><title> ... My workspace for a linked image ... </title></head>
<body>
<p> <a href="LinkURL">
<IMG SRC="ImageURL"
</a>
</p>
</body>
</html>

Now replace the text inside the double quotes in both "LinkURL" and "ImageURL" with your image URL.  The notepad content should now look like this:

<head><title> ... My workspace for a linked image ... </title></head>
<body>
<p> <a href="http://www.eaglepointcharters.com/jpg/fishing%20reports/100_0121sm.jpg">
<IMG SRC="http://www.eaglepointcharters.com/jpg/fishing%20reports/100_0121sm.jpg"
</a>
</p>
</body>
</html>

Save this file to your desktop with the extension "htm" making sure that you replace the "text document" type with "all files" before naming the document "linkurl.htm".

You should see that document now on your desktop.

Double click it and a new browser window or tab should open with your image.  Now simply drag or copy  it into your post as described above depending on the browser in use.

By clicking on the image and dragging it from the lower right or upper right hand corner, you can now resize it.  In general you want to use this procedure if you want to display a smaller image and allow the user to expand it in the bigger window.  So make it smaller by dragging it towards the middle.

Put the text cursor below the image and continue to type or otherwise click the preview button and see if you are happy.  Press post message and your post is done!  Be sure to check that you can now click on the image to expand it.

Let me know if it worked.
